From Wingwalker to Pilot: Emma’s Journey into the Cockpit

Not everyone’s journey into aviation starts in the cockpit. For Emma, it began standing on the wing of an aircraft at 160mph. Her route into flying is anything but typical, but it’s a story that perfectly captures how passion for aviation can evolve in unexpected ways.

A Leap into the Unknown

Emma’s introduction to aviation came just after Covid, when her childhood friend Kirsten invited her to try wingwalking. What followed was a complete change in direction.

“Wingwalking is a revival of the golden age of aviation. We perform choreographed routines on the wings of 1940s Boeing Stearmans, recreating the barnstorming era in a much safer way.”

Within a short space of time, Emma left her flat, committed fully to training, and joined the AeroSuperBatics team. It was a decision that reshaped everything.

“I didn’t think twice. I poured everything into it and it changed my whole life.”

Life on the Wing

As a professional wingwalker, Emma performs high-energy aerial displays across the UK and internationally. Flying in close formation, climbing onto the top wing mid-flight, and performing aerobatic manoeuvres, the role demands physical strength, precision, and complete trust in the pilot. The team performs up to 35 displays a season, travelling across the UK and overseas, from local airfields to international airshows. It is fast-paced, physically demanding, and highly seasonal. But after five years in the role, something shifted.

From Watching Pilots to Becoming One

Despite spending years in the air, Emma had never actually flown the aircraft herself.

“I think the desire to fly was always there. My dad loved aviation and I grew up going to airshows with him. But I didn’t think I was capable, and there’s always the financial side to consider.”

Eventually, she decided to take the leap. Her first lesson took place at Sleap Airfield with Shropshire Aero Club. It was a completely different experience from anything she had known.

“In the Stearman, we don’t use headsets and there are no instruments in front of you. Suddenly I was dealing with radios, controls, and a completely new environment. But the best part was actually flying the aircraft for the first time. I loved it.”

A New Chapter with Pooleys

After a few initial lessons, Emma returned to the demands of the wingwalking season. But the spark had been lit. In late 2025, she picked up her training again, this time committing fully to progressing towards her Private Pilot Licence. Using the Pooleys Aviation Academy for ground school, she began working through her exams alongside her flight training. She achieved her first solo flight in November.

“Going solo was a massive milestone. Probably the proudest moment I’ve had in flying so far.”

Emma credits the Pooleys Aviation Academy with helping her build confidence and structure her learning.

“The online academy has been instrumental in helping me progress through my exams. The support from the Pooleys team and ambassadors has made a huge difference. It really feels like a community.”

She is now continuing her training, working through navigation and building experience in the cockpit.

Full Circle

Emma’s journey is a reminder that there is no single path into aviation. From standing on the wing of a biplane to taking control of the aircraft herself, she has experienced both sides of flight in a way very few people ever will. And she’s not finished yet.
